Photographing the same subject in 3 different moods with Bea

It never stops fascinating me how much light shaping, the choice of color and editing can influence the overall look and feel of a photograph, and in this 2.5 hour video tutorial I (Bea) would like to invite you behind the scenes of my creative process as I work on 3 different moods in my cozy home studio in England, using the same subject. I’ll walk you through how different natural light shaping tools and techniques can affect the shadows in the scene and influence the overall look and feel of the food story, and then show you, step by step, how I create a bright, dark and (my favorite!) light brown image.

Using Natural Light in the Studio

Bright Photoshoot — Bright and airy images are infused with an incredible ‘feeling of
lightness’, and in this demo I’ll walk you through step by step how I create this type of mood, focusing on the beauty of light and minimalism. Be ready for backlighting magic, too!

Dark Photoshoot — In this demo, I’ll use the same subject, but this time explore how to
shape the natural light to create a strong and eye-catching dark mood. And since the creative process is rarely free of challenges, you’ll see some of my scene styling struggles too.

Light Brown Photoshoot — I also want to take you behind the scenes of my favorite light brown mood! Over the years it became my signature style and I get asked a lot
of questions about it. During this photoshoot, I’ll use the same subject again, but this time build a slightly wider image with few more elements. I’ll walk you through this creative process step-by- step and share my all-time favorite and time-tested compositional techniques. (Psst! You’ll also see me come up with fun and spontaneous ideas on the go!)

Edit in Lightroom — Editing is a crucial part of the light shaping process, and in this part of the workshop I’ll walk you through my favorite 'light shaping' tools and techniques in Lightroom Desktop. And since each mood requires a different editing approach, I’ll share with you how I edit the bright, dark and light brown image step by step.

To make it easy for you to find and access our favorite sources + gear, we’ve listed it all out + linked to it in our handy little resource guide!

"This is without a doubt *the* workshop you'll need on the art and business of photography"

"Eva and Bea did a really great job with this virtual workshop. I’m not quite a beginner in food photography, but I’m far from mastering the lighting, the focus, the depth of field and not to mention the business side of this field. In the round table discussions, these ladies came with so many examples and such thorough instructions, balancing all the important aspects of food photography. I also loved the creative process videos where I got to see how they set up their shots, how they approach lighting and how they actually shoot. Even though they have fantastic talent and skills in food photography, both Eva and Bea came across as humble and passionate. This is without question the workshop you’ll need on the art and business of  photography!” "

When you join, you'll also get access to 10 exclusive brand-new presets custom-made by Bea and Eva! These presets contain a mix of moods + styles, from warm subjects to bright and poppy scenes to correcting over-exposed captures, we covered a wide range of editing tools within the presets to speed up + simplify your editing process! The presets are XMP files and there's an installation guide, as well!

And Don't Forget About Your Preset Bonus!

Hey there! I’m Eva, and I learned photography on a film camera dark room-style when I was 15 (which was a loooong time ago). I have a Saveur-nominated food blog, Adventures in Cooking, and have written + shot two cookbooks, Adventures in Chicken and First We Eat, which was nominated by IACP for 2019's best cookbook.

I’ve shot for clients as big as 7-Up, and as small as local restaurants. I’ve done takeovers on the @Instagram main feed, my work’s been featured in dozens of magazines + publications, and I work full-time doing what I love—photography and teaching.

I've taught thousands of students, both online and in-person, and hosted hundreds of hours of photography + styling workshops all over the world. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a familiar face as students from my entry-level workshops regularly come back for my advanced level ones :)

Eva Kosmas Flores

YOUR HOSTS

Hi 🖐🏼 I'm Bea! I grew up in a picturesque little town in the south-west of Poland. At the age of 20, I left a job in a local bakery, packed my suitcase and bought a one-way ticket to England. It was the most crazy decision I have ever made in my life.

Why did I move? I felt lost. I didn't really know what to do with myself and I hoped that this new adventure would help me find my direction in life. Nothing, as you probably guessed, happened overnight, but one day something nudged me to buy a camera....and that was a turning point.

Today, I create food stories for brands and magazines from all over the world and I still pinch myself that telling visual stories about delicious ingredients and recipes is what I do for a living. I could photograph and talk about food photography all day!

When I don't photograph I share my passion with other photographers in this warm and beautiful community through online tutorials, in person workshops, or through my best-selling book How to Photograph Food.

Bea Lubas

Always a food lover and originally from a graphic design and art direction background, I fell in love with food as a creative outlet over 10 years ago when I moved into my own home and started cooking and baking from scratch. I started my Instagram, Made By Mr Millas in 2017 after being encouraged by friends to collect the phone snaps I was taking of my food in one place.

Thousands of photographs, a "proper" camera and a number of years later, I am honoured to now call myself an award-winning Food Photographer, Food Stylist, Art Director and Recipe Developer, creating for my clients from my UK home studio in my bold, graphic and colourful style.

Costas Millas

I’m a food photographer who has been photographing professionally for over a decade. I’m an Aussie gal, based in Canada and the founder of Two Loves Studio, one of the most resourceful and educational blogs on photographing food.

I love to capture capture visual stories and create bright, uplifting imagery that emphasises the beaty and emotional connection of real food.

Rachel Korinek

We are Laura & Nora, a photographer and stylist couple from Berlin. Laura studied photography and Nora fashion design. Quickly after we met we decided to work together and started the blog Our Food Stories and @_foodstories_ Instagram to showcase our work. We use both platforms as a portfolio and mainly work for other brands to create content for them. We absolutely love to style and photograph beautiful table settings outside and therefore moved with our studio to the countryside some years ago.

Laura Muthesius + Nora Eisermann

"The workshop offered so much more than just how to style and photograph food"

Merrill Buckley

"Being part of Bea + Eva's workshop was a highlight for me of the very strange year that was 2020! Thank you for the opportunity to connect with you both as well as the community you've created as a result. I wasn't able to join the live discussions but I followed the recordings with great anticipation & I was not disappointed. Your workshop offered so much more than just how to style & photograph food; it was filled with a wealth of information. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your craft. What a great gift to know your thoughts, processes, challenges & respective journeys. I really enjoyed being "on set" with each of you & I look forward to someday joining one of your workshops in person. Thank you!

Nope! This is a brand-new Virtual Workshop with all-new behind-the-scenes recordings and content. We've created a totally new experience for you with a variety of different creative focuses, from photography to videography, with even more creative perspectives (hello Rachel Korinek, Costas Millas, and Nora + Laura!) to give you the richest experience possible.

No, this is *brand-new* content, created specifically to emulate the in-person workshop experience in a virtual setting and to foster deeper insight into the creative process. From talking about shoots that go wrong and how to overcome them, to the course community where you can connect with like-minded creatives. And if there's one thing I've observed from collaborative shoots, it's that every photographer has their own unique creative process, and you can learn SO much by seeing and hearing about the different ways that talented creatives get to their "aha!" moments.

There may be a bit of overlap in some of the general advice (i.e. soft diffused lighting), but the video and text content is completely unique and was created to give you a better look at my and Bea’s creative process, while guiding you through applying them to your own, and creating a community-based workshop experience.

Eva, I’m a member of your Vertical Video or Photography + Styling + Branding Course, is this going to be the same content as your course?

FAQ

I participated in Eva + Bea's 'Visual Voices' or 'Creative Process' Virtual Workshop, is this the same one?

Access to the workshop NEVER expires. As long as there's an internet, you’ll always have access to it ;)

How long do I have access to the workshop?

This workshop doesn't explain entry-level camera settings, it operates on the assumption that you know how to do basic adjustments like changing your aperture, shutterspeed, and ISO. You can definitely still learn a LOT from watching our shooting, styling, and editing process, but if you're looking for a more structured learning environment that starts with the basics and grows from there, my signature Photography + Styling + Branding Course might be a better fit for you.

I’m new to my camera, will this be helpful for me or is it just for experienced photographers?

No, you can take this course with an iPhone if you'd like. Granted, Bea's behind-the-scenes focuses on a using DSLR camera, but you can still put to use the styling and creative process techniques without one. Eva uses an iPhone 14 ProMax for her behind-the-scenes video shoot, so you can definitely put to use what you learn in both Bea + Eva's workshops with whatever type of camera or smart phone you have.

Do I need a camera to take this course?

All the equipment we recommend or use in the workshop is linked to in our Resources Guide within the workshop. It's full of our favorite gear + prop sources, with hyperlinks, so you don't have to worry about googling anything or accidentally ordering the wrong thing :)

What equipment do you recommend?

If you want to learn to edit in Adobe Lightroom, you will need to download the program. Bea uses Adobe Lightroom desktop for her editing demonstration videos. I use the Adobe Rush desktop app for my video editing demonstration. You will also need to download the Zoom application (it's free) to participate in the round table discussions.

Do I need any computer programs or apps?

First of all, thank you so much for taking one of my courses!! Because this is a collaborative project with many co-hosts coming together to teach, unfortunately I can't offer a student discount on the Virtual Workshop.

I'm a previous student of Eva's, does my student discount work on this?

Still have questions after peeking at the FAQ?

we're happy to help!

I really am thankful for having the chance to be in this workshop. In a time that is difficult to have contact with people, it was very easy to feel like we were all there in the same room. I really loved feeling so inspired and welcomed. I love that, thanks to you and Bea, a community of creative people were engaged to support each other, and that I was able to "meet" these lovely people. Plus there was so much great information that you both shared that I’m still processing. Hope to see you in person someday!
